THE BIKERIDERS by DANNY LYON

This summer, ATLAS Gallery, in London, exhibited a few modern prints that the young photographer Danny Lyon took between 1963 y 1967, when he immersed himself completely into the lives and culture of the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club. 

Lyon, born in New York in 1942, spent four years with the Club's members on long distance rides, at meets, races and gathering across the USA. From Milwaukee to New York, crossing New Orleans and Detroit. 

"The Bikeriders" was first published in 1968. This journal-size book has been reissue a few years later. Here you have a sample of some pictures he took during that time. 

Este verano, la ATLAS Gallery de Londres presentaba una exposición de algunos de los trabajos que el fotógrafo Danny Lyon realizó entre 1963 y 1967. 

El autor, nacido en 1942, formó parte de los Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club, lo que le brindó la oportunidad de seguir a la banda durante sus encuentros, carreras y paseos en carretera a lo largo de los Estados Unidos. Desde Milwaukee hasta New York, pasando por New Orleans y Detroit. 

En 1968 publicaba "The Bikeriders", libro que ha sido reeditado años más tarde. Aquí tenéis una pequeña selección de aquellos momentos que Lyon capturó por entonces. 

London Underground in the 1970s-1980s by BOB MAZZER

While working as a projectionist in a porn cinema in Central London during the 1980s, photograpger Bob Mazzer began photographing on the tube during his way from King's Cross to Manor House.

He habitually snapped characters he met on his way, capturing the hijinks of London’s pissed up late night revellers as they made their way home.

Here is a small collection of my favorite pictures of his work. 

 

CYNTHIA MYERS, de Playmate a chica Russ Meyer

Los del Pinterest me han eliminado la foto de Cynthia Myers que véis ahí arriba y estoy muy enfadada. Así que me parece bien dedicar la entrada de hoy a una de las chicas Russ Meyers más hermosas. Y no sólo para mí, pues en el año 2000 quedó en décimo lugar según una encuesta para elegir a la mejor chica Playboy del siglo XX.

Modelo y actriz, nació en Ohio en 1950. Su padre murió en un accidente de coche cuando ella tenía sólo cuatro años, así que fue criada entre su madre, sus abuelos y demás familiares. Según contaba, con 13 años ya estaba desarrollada y muy bien dotada así que enseguida empezaron a ofrecerle oportunidades para convertirse en modelo.

Sus fotos para Playboy fueron tomadas en el verano de 1968, cuando era todavía menor de edad. Por eso decidieron esperar unos meses a que cumpliera los 18 años, y de esta forma se convirtió en chica Playboy para la edición de Diciembre de aquel año.

Aunque su popularidad la consiguió realmente por formar parte de las Carrie Nations en “Más Allá del Valle de las Muñecas”, dirigida por Russ Meyer en 1970.  

Murió el 4 de Noviembre del 2011 en Los Angeles debido a un cáncer de pulmón.

So I’ve decided to dedicate this short entry to one of the most beautiful Russ Meyer girls. And that’s not just for me, as she was voted #10 in a pole for Playboy Playmates of the Century in 2000.

American model and actress, she was born in Ohio on 1950s. She was raised by her mother, her grandparents and various aunts and uncles after her father was killed in a car accident when she was four years old. According with her, she was 13 when her breasts began to develop, so he was offered opportunities to model very soon.

Her Playboy pics were taken in June of ’68 when she was 17 years old. So Playboy waited until Cynthia was comfortably 18 to publish her pictorial. And she became Playmate for the December issue of that year.

Myers really achieved her greatest enduring cult cinema popularity with her portrayal of musician in The Carrie Nations in Russ Meyer's gloriously outrageous "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls”, in 1970.

She died of lung cancer on November 4, 2011.

Bella y exótica GWEN WONG

La Playmate de Abril de 1967 es esta belleza que podéis ver. Mezcla de nacionalidad china, escocesa, australiana, española irlandesa y filipina. Un cóctel explosivo, origen de la pequeña y exótica Gwen Wong (1.52 m.!!)

Amante de la cocina, Gwen nació en Filipinas a finales de la II Guerra Mundial. Pasó parte de su infancia en Australia pero finalmente se mudó con su familia a San Francisco en 1949. Antes de convertirse en chica Playboy, estudió pintura y cerámica en California... Bueno, imagino que todo esto os la sudará bastante, así que prefiero no enrrolllarme y que disfrutéis de sus preciosas fotos. 

Sólo decir que podéis verla en la película "La Hechicera", de 1969, con el papel de Fong Qual.

Beautiful and exotic GWEN WONG

The pretty girl you can see over here was the Playmate of April 1967. A beautiful blend of six nationalities: Chinese, Scottish, Spanish, Irish, Australian and Filipino. An explosive cocktail, the roots of the little and exotic Gwen Wong. 

Cook lover, Gwen was born in Filipinas during the latter part of World War Two. She spent some of her infancy in Austrlia bu finally she moved with her family to San Francisco in 1949. Before she becomin a Playbunny, she studied painting and ceramics in California... Well, I think you don't give a fuck this info, so I prefer don't talk too much and you enjoy her marvelous pics. 

I just want to tell you can see her in one film, The Witchmaker (1969), playing the role of "Fong Qual".  

Los jóvenes de los años 50 por NINA LEEN

Aunque nació en Rusia a principios del siglo y se crió en Europa, Nina Leen llegó a Estados Unidos en 1939. Pronto se convirtió en una de las primeras fotógrafas de la revista LIFE, para la que realizó más de cuarenta portadas.

Sus reportajes abarcaban principalmente la vida social y la moda de aquella época. Mis favoritas: los retratos de la cultura adolescente en los años 40 y 50. Instantáneas de grupos de amigos tomando batidos, los bailes de instituto o de compras en tiendas de discos. 

Aquí va una muestra de ello.  

50s American Teenagers by NINA LEEN

Although she was born in Russia in the early 20th century, Nina Leen arrived to USA in 1939. Soon she became one of the first women photographers for LIFE magazine, which she did more than forty covers.

Her works include the American social life and fashion of that era. My favorites: teen culture pics in the 40s and 50s. Friends taking milkshakes, high school sock hops or shopping at the records store.

Antes de Bettie: la misteriosa KEVIN DALEY

Observando las miles de fotografías que existen de pin-ups de los años 50, resulta fácil comprobar que los peinados de moda de la época estaban hechos en su mayoría a base de rulos: raya al lado, frente despejada y rizos por encima del hombro. Por eso siempre me han llamado la atención las modelos de la época que, como Bettie Page, iban con la melena peinada a ondas y ocultaban su frente bajo un característico flequillo.

Esa imagen se asociará para siempre a la guapísima Bettie, lo que no quiere decir que fuera la única durante esos años que llevara ese peinado. No es fácil encontrar modelos de los años 50 con flequillo corto y melena ondulada, por eso Kevin Daley supone una excepción. Además fue precursora del "peinado Bettie", pues sus fotos empezaron a publicarse en revistas a finales de los años 40, antes de la Page. De hecho, los fotógrafos que comenzaron a trabajar con Bettie, ya la relacionaban por entonces con Kevin por su peinado. Y, según cuenta la leyenda, fue el fotógrafo aficionado Jerry Tibbs, su descubridor, quien sugirió que probara a dejarse un flequillo para disimular su frente. 

No hay mucho más que decir sobre Kevin Daley. Existen algunas modelos más de esta época de melena y flequillo, aunque menos conocidas. Sea como sea, esto queda sólo como algo anecdótico, porque de pocas modelos pin-ups existen infinitas fotos como las que hay de Bettie y ninguna de ellas poseía el carisma y la fotogeneidad que caracterizaban a la del título tan bien merecido de “Reina de las Pin-Ups”.

Before Bettie: mysterious KEVIN DALEY

If you watch the thousands of pin-ups pics from the 50s, it’s easy to check that the most of fashion hairstyles was made with rollers: side part hair, nothing in the forehead and curlies over the shoulders. For that reason I’ve always been surprised each time I see pin-ups from that era with long, dark, wavy hair and smooth, blunt-cut fringe like Bettie Page.

That image will be always associated with the beautiful Bettie, but this doesn’t mean she was the only one who was wearing that hairstyle. It’s not easy to find 50s pin-ups with short fringe and long wavy hair, so Kevin Dayle is an exception. Besides, she was a precursor of the “Bettie Page hairstyle” because her pics began to be published in men magazines at late 40s, before the Page. In fact, photographers who started to work with her referred to her as “Kevin Dayle lookalike”. And according to the legend, the amateur photographer and policeman Jerry Tibbs, he suggested she cut her hair in bangs because of her high, prominent forehead.

There’s no much more to tell about Kevin Daley. There are some more models from the 50s with wavy hair and bangs, although they are a little less unknown. In any case, this is just an anecdote, because there are only a few pics of  pin-up models like the Bettie pics and anyone had the charming and the photogenic thing that characterized to the well deserved title of “Queen of Pin-Ups”
