London Underground in the 1970s-1980s by BOB MAZZER

While working as a projectionist in a porn cinema in Central London during the 1980s, photograpger Bob Mazzer began photographing on the tube during his way from King's Cross to Manor House.

He habitually snapped characters he met on his way, capturing the hijinks of London’s pissed up late night revellers as they made their way home.

Here is a small collection of my favorite pictures of his work. 

 

ROCKPILE - Seconds of Pleasure (F-Beat Records, 1980)

A good friend of mine gave me this gift! I feel so happy as this was one of the records I heard when I arrived to London a few months ago. It will always bring back good memories!

"Seconds of Pleasure" is the name of the album Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Billy Bemmer and Terry Williams recorded under the name of Rockpile. You can hear a mix of rock'n'roll, power-pop and new wave. They play songs of Chuck Berry and Joe Tex. But "Play That Fast Thing" and "You Ain't Nothin' But Fine" are the best songs for me. I can't help my feet dance on their own! 

This is an essential record for any fan collector of Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe or just good rock'n'roll. 

Un buen colega mío me regaló el otro día este disco. Y yo ando más que contenta, ya que es un LP que siempre va a traerme muchos recuerdos por ser uno de los primeros que escuché cuando llegué a Londres hace unos meses.

¿Mis temas favoritos?: "Play That Fast Thing" y "You Ain't Nothin' But Fine". Simplemente porque es escucharlos, ¡y mis pies no pueden evitar ponerse a bailar por su cuenta! Es un disco básico en la discoteca de cualquier fan de Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds o el rock'n'roll en general. 

JEFF HYMAN's Passport

Here we have Jeff Hyman's passport. Or maybe I should say better: Joey Ramone's passport!

This is a rare collector piece that it was auctioned off on February 2013. I think this is the first picture I see of Joey without glasses. Tell me I'm a weirdo but I think he looks very nice!

Hoy tenemos por aquí el pasaporte que perteneció a Jeff Hyman. O, mejor dicho: ¡el pasaporte de Joey Ramone! Se trata de una pieza rara de coleccionista que fue subastada en Febrero del 2013.

Creo que es la primera vez que veo a Joey sin gafas. Y podéis llamarme bicho raro o lo que queráis, ¡pero yo lo veo aquí muy guapo!

SODA FRAISE - Ça Baigne Dans L'Huile / Rock n' Roll's (Sing Sing, 2013)

Este verano hemos podido disfrutar de la reedición del único single que nos dejaron los franceses Soda Fraise. Todo ello, gracias al trabajo de Sing Sing Records, sello de Nueva York encargado de reeditar auténtica joyas del punk y power-pop de los 70-80 (bandas tan deliciosas como Protex, The Jook, Orbits...).

Originalmente publicado por Philips en 1980, éste 7" contiene dos auténticos pildorazos de punk francés claramente influenciado gracias al éxito de Plastic Bertrand. Mucha melodía rock'n'roll, sobre todo la cara A.

SODA FRAISE - Ça Baigne Dans L'Huile

Poco más hay que decir de ellos, ya que no grabaron mucho más y se disolvieron en un año.

This summer, we have been happy to enjoy a reissue of the only single that the French band Soda Fraise recorded. It has been thanks to a record label from New York called Sing Sing Records. They are in charge of release 70s and 80s punk and power-pop gems (amazing bands like Protex, The Jook, Orbits...).

Originally released by Philips in 1980, this 7" has two real killer tunes of French punk, influenced by the success band Plastic Bertrand. Rock'n'roll melodies, A-side is a blast!!

Not to much to talk about them. They did not record any more and they disbanded after one whole year.

VV.AA. Too Much Rockin' (Wendi Records, 198?)

Entre mediados y finales de los 80, el sello australiano Wendi Records comenzó a sacar una serie de volúmenes dedicados al rockabilly, el R&B o el doo-wop. El único disco que yo tenía hasta ahora del sello era el “From The Garage To The Studio”, una recopilación de temas raros de rock’n’roll de los 50 que me compré hace tiempo en una de las tiendas de la calle Tallers de Barcelona (¡visita obligada para cualquier yonki de los discos!).

Años después, y tras un largo periodo de búsqueda y captura, soy la feliz poseedora del “Too Much Rockin’”, referencia número cuatro del sello Wendi y con los Hermanos Marx en la portada (no sé por qué). De alguna manera llegó a mis oídos, y desde entonces es uno de mis discos favoritos. La mayoría son temas de entre 1958 y 1962. Rhythm & blues y doo wop. Rock’n’Roll negro, en definitiva.

Thurston Harris

Vienen un par de temas de Thurston Harris para Aladdin: “Smokey Joes” y (el mejor) “Do What You Did”. De Young Jessie incluye el famoso “Hit, Git & Split” y la cara B del single que tampoco tiene desperdicio. Similar a éste tema es otro ya clásico entre las rarezas de R&B como es el “Juicy Fruit” de Rudy Green, ¡con piano y saxo sonando durante toda la canción! “Rock, Rock, Rock” de los Blue Jays es otra de las canciones que más me gustan del disco, claro ejemplo de rock’n’roll de grupo vocal, como el “Rock’n’Roll Radio” de Joe Boot & The Fabulous Winds. Hablando de grupos vocales, en la cara B aparecen los Electras con “Ten Steps To Love”. Tema FAVORITO de doo-wop. The Electras grabaron años antes dos de los rocanroles más salvajes que he podido escuchar bajo el nombre de The Valiants, y como The Untouchables también tienen material bueno. Hay mucha historia detrás de este grupo y espero poder contar más adelante. Quiero decir con todo esto que no es de extrañar que con este tan buen gusto, “Ten Steps To Love” sea TAN bueno.

Chuck Higgins

A parte de todo esto, viene una versión del “Stay” de Maurice Williams por Porgy and The Monarchs; el famoso “Mamma Get Your Hammer”, del que se dice que es el (atención) único blanco del disco: Bobby Peterson. Y Ray Sharpe, Chuck Higgins, Dean and Jean…

Sólo se sacaron 300 copias, así que afortunados quienes tengamos en nuestras manos semejante tesoro.

At the middle or late 80s, the Australian Wend Records started to release some issues focus on rockabilly, R&B or doo-wop. My only record from this label was “From The Garage To The Studio”, a 50s rare rock’n’roll compilation I bought in a record shop a long time ago in Tallers street in Barcelona (essential visit for any vinyl records junkie!).

A few years ago and after a long searching time, I am the happy owner of “Too Much Rockin’” LP, reference number 4 of Wendi Records and with the Marx Brothers on the front (I don’t know why) Since I heard it for the very first time, it has been one of my favourite records. The most tunes are between 1958 and 1962. R&B y doo wop. Black rock’n’roll, definitely.

You can find a couple Thurton Harris tunes which were released by Aladdin Records: “Smokey Joes” and (the best) “Do What You Did”. It includes the famous “Hit, Git & Split” by Young Jessie and also brilliant flipside. A reminiscent of this one is the rare R&B classic “Juicy Fruit” by Rudy Green, with piano and killer saxo playing for the whole song! “Rock, Rock, Rock” by The Blue Jays is another of my favourite songs of this record, an example of good rock’n’roll by a vocal group, like “Rock’n’Roll Radio” by Joe Boot & The Fabulous Winds. By the way, you can fint The Electras and “Ten Steps To Love” on the B-side. FAVORITE tune. The Electras recorded two real killer rock’n’roll songs a few years before as The Valiants. And you can find another good songs under the name of The Untouchables. There’s too much to tell about this band and I hope I’m able to tell in the next time. If they had a really good musical taste, I mean it’s hardly surprising “Ten Steps To Love” is SUCH a killer tune.

Besides, you can find Maurice Williams’ “Stay” covered by Porgy and The Monarchs;  the famous “Mamm Get Your Hammer” by (apparently) the only non-black artist featured on this LP: Bobby Peterson. And Ray Sharpe, Chuck Higgins, Dean and Jean…

Wendi Records just released 300 copies approx. Lucky us who can hold in our hand such gem.

TERRORVISION. Ted Nicolaou, 1986.

Una de las mejores páginas de Facebook, "Aficionados a la Fantasía y la Ciencia Ficción", me descubrió hace unos días una auténtica joya de la ciencia-ficción más basura que uno se pueda encontrar. Aquellas entrañables y viscosas criaturas del trailer de "TerrorVision" calaron en los más hondo de mi ser.

La primera sorpresa fue encontrarme con la directora del Vince Lombardi High School (¿os suena?), Mary Woronov haciendo esta vez de madre de familia de los Putterman. Y qué familia: un matrimonio 'swinger' (aficionados a los intercambios de pareja); Suzy, la hija heavy-punkie-nuevaolera con su cardado multicolor; y el abuelo, feliz poseedor de un arsenal armamentístico quien enseña al pequeño Stanly algunas lecciones de supervivencia.

No podemos olvidar a Medusa y al novio 'heavy' de Suzy, con su camiseta de los W.A.S.P. (y peluca al más puro estilo Marky Ramone...).

Dirigida por Ted Nicolaou en 1986, es una película de serie B de los años 50 pero hecha en los 80. Y con un toque de comedia, claro. Hasta tiene pequeños detalles de cine 'gore' (adoro esas vísceras envueltas en jugo verde). Y como en casi todo este tipo de cine, al final el argumento empieza a desvariar con lo que es fácil perderse. Sea como sea, es imprescindible para pasar una noche divertida de fin de semana comienzo pizzas y bebiendo cerveza.

Thanks to "Aficionados a la Fantasía y la Ciencia Ficción", one of the best Facebook pages, I discovered a real gem of trash science-fiction. Those lovely and gloppy creatures from the trailer left a mark on me. 

First of all I found with the principal from Vince Lombardi High School, Mary Woronov playing the role of mother of family. And what a family!: a 'swinger' couple; Suzy, the heavy-punki-newaver daughter with multicoloured backcom; the grandad, a happy owner of store of weapons, who teaches to his grandson some survival lessons. 

We can't forget to Medusa or to the 'heavy metal' boyfriend of Suzy and his W.A.S.P. t-shirt (and his wig like Marky Ramone style...). 

Filmed by Ted Nicolaou in 1986, this is like a 50s B-movi but made in the 80s. With a touch of comedy, of course. Even it has some gore scenes (I love that guts wrapped in green juice). And like almost all of these kind of films, the end starts to become delirious and it's easy stop to pay attention. Anyway, this is an essential film to have a funny weekend night eating pizza and drinking beer. 

THE SPLATCATS - Sin 73 (Moving Target Records, 1986)

"Lust-crazed teens on a rhythm-driven rampage!!!"

Mi última compra, adquirida hace un par de semanas en la Feria del Disco de Algeciras.

Desde Buffalo, Nueva York, llegaban Splatcats a finales de los años 80, en plena época del resurgimiento del garage. Su discografía es breve y Sin 73 (probar a leerlo con la portada hacia abajo) es, sin duda, su mejor trabajo.

Garage con algunos toques de surf y, por supuesto, punk. Clara influencia de Barracudas en su fantástico "Surfin' Hearse" de Jan & Dean. La otra versión que incluyen es el "Wildman" de los Tamrons, un clásico del 60s punk.

Y, personalmente, ¡la portada es acojonante! Lástima que su autor (firma un tal V.Laszlo...) parece que no tenga mucho más...

My last purchase. I bought it a couple weeks ago at Algeciras Record Fair.

Splatcats was a Buffalo, New York band in the late 80s when the revival garage time. They have a short discography and Sin 73 (try to look at the printing upside down) is their best work.

Garage music with some touches of surf and punk, of course. Clear Barracudas influence in their fantastic “Surfin’ Hearse” of Jan & Dean. “Wildman” of The Tamrons is another cover they include, a classic 60s punk.

And, personally, the art cover is gorgeous!!! It’s a pity the graphic artist (cover is signed by someone called V. Laszlo…) looks like he doesn’t have more works…

 

ANIMACIÓN EXPERIMENTAL de OSAMU TEZUKA

"Historias de una Calle" (Arumachkado no Monogatari)

Hace unas semanas, un buen amigo me consiguió este fantástico DVD que hacía tiempo quería tener en mis manos.

Creo que ningún fan de la animación en general debería perderse esta joya que reúne trece extraordinarios trabajos del maestro Tezuka. Cortometrajes de animación experimental desde 1962 hasta 1988.

A parte de dibujar y asentar las bases de lo que es el manga que hoy conocemos, en 1961 creó la productora Mushi para competir con Toei después de que su contrato acabara. Y siete años después, empezó a trabajar en Tezuka Productions, la cual perdura en la actualidad. De toda esta época datan los trece cortometrajes en los que Tezuka estuvo implicado como diseñador, animador, productor, director…

Uno de mis favoritos es “Jumping”, galardonado con el Gran Premio al Mejor Corto de Animación en el Festival de Zagreb de 1984. La primera vez que le dieron este premio a un japonés. ¿Os imagináis dar la vuelta al mundo dando saltos agigantados? Pasar por rascacielos, barcos, jungla, guerra… ¡hasta el infierno!

 “Una película estropeada” (Onoboro Film, 1985), todo derroche de imaginación, inspirándose para ello en los defectos que el paso del tiempo va dejando en las cintas de cine mudo.

 En “Sirena” (Ningyo, 1964) cuentan como la imaginación puede acabar en frustración y la consecuente locura.

“Recuerdos”, “La gota”, “Pulsar”, “La Leyenda del Bosque”… En todos es común encontrar el miedo a la guerra, críticas a la estupidez humana o el amor hacia la naturaleza. Temas constantes en toda la obra de Osamu Tezuka.

OSAMU TEZUKA: the EXPERIMENTAL FILMS

A few weeks ago, a very friend of mine got for me this fantastic DVD that I had been looking for since a long time ago. 

I think this is a must of any animation fanatic. A gem with thirteen amazing works of Tezuka sensei. Experimental short animation films from 1962 until 1988. 

Apart from being manga drawer and establishing the basis of Japanese comic of today, he started Mushi Productions as a rivalry with Toei Animation when his contract expired. Seven years later, he started Tezuka Productions which endure until today. The shorts films of this DVD are from this period in which Tezuka was involved like designer, cartoonist, producer, director…

“Jumping”, one of my favorites, won the Grand Prize at the 1984 World Festival of Animated Films, held in Zagreb. It was the first time the prize had been won by someone from Japan. Can you imagine going around the world with gigantic steps? Going through skyscraper, ships, the jungle, wars… until the hell!

“Broken Down Film” (Onoboro Film, 1985), a tremendous display of imagination in which Tezuka is inspired by defects that time makes silent film stills.

“Mermaid” (Ningyo, 1964) tells about how imagination can finish in frustration and consisten madness.

“Memory”, “Shizuku”, “Push”, “Mori no Dendetsu”…Fear during wars, critics to human stupidity or love to nature are topics you can find easily in these short films. Typical topics in every work of Osamu Tezuka.
