SCRAPS - S/T (No Front Teeth Records, 2014)

The Scraps debut 7'' is here! The three piece punk combo are introducing an EP with four energetic and raw songs in which punk '77 is the main influence for them. Just add a bit of Buzzcocks, Ramones and modern bands like The Briefs or The Vicious and you get the sound of The Scraps. Each song is easily enjoyable from the beginning to the end. They have a very good taste playing melodic and catchy riff guitars. "Waste my time" is an absolutely hit!!

And not just that. They have a special care with the aesthetic and design of their records. There are 3 variations of this 7”: the regular version is the printed collage cover (there are 10 different designs for this), the limited edition (100 only) are hand made from vintage Vogue magazines from the 1970’s and 1980’s. And the third and super-limited version (just 50) is an actual collaged cover. All different and were hand made by Marco NFT. Real art. Real "Do It Yourself" style!! 

They have announced many gig dates for the next months. They will play supporting bands as The Vibrators or Giuda. So if you belong to the class of punk'77 and fancy attend to a gig of punk made in London, don't miss The Scraps!!!

LOS PEPES - Tonight (Wanda Records, 2014)

Possibly the loudest power-pop band on Earth? Definitely... yes!! You can check it either in their shows or in this EP with four songs released by Wanda Records (a label about we talked a time ago).

Although they tag themselves as a power-pop band, Los Pepes play punk music… with lots of pop melodies. I’ve been listening this record and I even remembered the sound of some bands were playing in the 1990s. So “Tonight” gives the name to this EP and it has all of that: punk energy and melody, which means you fancy have good vibes and have fun! It has become a hit for the band.

I can’t help remembering to the four New Yorkers from Queens when I listen to the beginning of “Too Late”. This is another ‘power’ tune with killer guitar. So it is easy to think the people go crazy when they play this song in the gigs!

On the flip we have “Unknown”. We could say this is the most power-pop tune in the record, with a very Exploding Hearts style. And the last song is “Somebody Else”. This is one of my favourite songs of Los Pepes. The early singles of The Hard-Ons come to my head. They have a really good taste!

So I have added another color record to my collection and I will use this review for the vinilocolor section of this blog. It has been released on red color, yellow color… My copy is like the picture above. Honestly, I’m not really sure if it is fuchsia, magenta, purple… Anyway, I think Elvis would have loved it. If you don’t know about this, it’s because you don’t know about the story of the grapes and the 1956 Eldorado cadillac. At least, I see that color…

¿Posiblemente la banda de power-pop más ruidosa del planeta? Definitivamente, ¡sí! Y, si no, a juzgar por sus conciertos o por este EP de cuatro canciones que nos trae Wanda Records (sello del que ya hicimos mención hace algún tiempo).

Aunque se empeñen en etiquetarse como una banda power-pop, Los Pepes son ante todo una banda punk... con mucha melodía pop, claro. Escuchando el EP, incluso llega a recordarme al sonido que tenían algunas bandas en los 90. Y es ésto lo que tiene el tema "Tonight" que da nombre al disco. ¡El buen rollo y las ganas de pasarlo bien que transmite es lo que le ha convertido en un éxito para el grupo!

No puedo evitar que los cuatro neoyorkinos del barrio de Queens se me vengan a la cabeza cuando escucho los primeros segundos de "Too Late". Otro tema "power" y guitarrero que hace vibrar al público en los conciertos.

En la cara B nos encontramos con "Unknown". Con él sí podrían pasar por grupo de power-pop en la onda de Exploding Hearts. Por último, cierran con el brillante "Somebody Else". Una de mis temas favoritos de la banda y con el que se me vienen a la cabeza las canciones de los primeros singles de los Hard-Ons. ¡Pero qué buen gusto tienen!

Sirva ésta reseña, de paso, para añadir otro disco de color a mi colección y a la sección vinilocolor de este blog. Se editó en rojo, amarillo... y el mío es el que véis en la foto de arriba. La verdad es que todavía no tengo  muy claro si es color fucsia, magenta, morado... pero creo que a Elvis le hubiera encantado. Y si no tenéis ni idea de qué va ésto, es porque no sabéis la historia de las uvas y su cadillac Eldorado de 1956. Al menos, yo lo veo de ése color.

ROCKPILE - Seconds of Pleasure (F-Beat Records, 1980)

A good friend of mine gave me this gift! I feel so happy as this was one of the records I heard when I arrived to London a few months ago. It will always bring back good memories!

"Seconds of Pleasure" is the name of the album Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Billy Bemmer and Terry Williams recorded under the name of Rockpile. You can hear a mix of rock'n'roll, power-pop and new wave. They play songs of Chuck Berry and Joe Tex. But "Play That Fast Thing" and "You Ain't Nothin' But Fine" are the best songs for me. I can't help my feet dance on their own! 

This is an essential record for any fan collector of Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe or just good rock'n'roll. 

Un buen colega mío me regaló el otro día este disco. Y yo ando más que contenta, ya que es un LP que siempre va a traerme muchos recuerdos por ser uno de los primeros que escuché cuando llegué a Londres hace unos meses. 

"Seconds of Pleasure" es el nombre del álbum que Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Billy Bemmer y Terry Williams grabaron bajo el nombre de Rockpile. En él puedes escuchar un combo perfecto de rock'n'roll, power-pop y new wave y un par de versiones de Chuck Berry y Joe Tex. 

¿Mis temas favoritos?: "Play That Fast Thing" y "You Ain't Nothin' But Fine". Simplemente porque es escucharlos, ¡y mis pies no pueden evitar ponerse a bailar por su cuenta! Es un disco básico en la discoteca de cualquier fan de Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds o el rock'n'roll en general. 

THE BUTLERS - Shop Around (Parkway, 1967)

First purchase of the year? Yes, it is! Although it may sounds as it had been recorded at early-mid 60s, this is a little gem from 1967 released by Parkway Records. 

I don't know what Smokey Robinson thought if he listened to it, but it's for me a real killer dance floor tune enough to wake a dead man. Be ready to hear a kind of The Miracles playing garage! Enjoy it.

¡Primera compra del año! Una joya editada por Parkway Records en 1967, aunque cierto es que para mi gusto suena como grabada a principios o mediados de los 60. 

No sé que pensó Smokey Robinson si alguna vez la escuchó, pero tiene un ritmo que levantaría a un muerto. ¡The Miracles haciendo garage! Que lo disfrutéis. 

AIRBAG - ¿Quién mató a Airbag? (Wild Punk, 2005)

Ya estamos a 15 de Septiembre. Tan sólo unos pocos días quedan para que el verano llegue a su fin. Pero no para mis adorados Airbag que, como decían en una de las canciones de su tercer disco, "Septiembre aún es verano".

Vinilo color naranja transparente con historias sobre chicas, amores imposibles, cubos de Rubik, coleccionistas de discos, el final del verano... Aunque iban alejándose del sonido Ramones y surf de su primer disco,  todavía sus canciones desprendían ese espíritu adolescente y la suficiente energía como para pegar saltos y dibujarte una sonrisa en la durante todo el día. Además, incluían una versión del "When I Want To Know" de los Remains y un brillante tema power-instrumental "Perrillos Verdes".

It's the 15th September. Just a few days left for the end of summer. But this is not according to my beloved Airbag. band. They said in one of the tracks of the third LP: "Septiembre aún es Verano" ("September is Still Summer"). 

Transparent orange colored vinyl record with stories about girls, frustrated love, Rubik cubes, record collectors, the end of the summer...  Although they started to getting away from Ramones and surf sound of the first LP, their songs were still like teen spirit and enough energy to jump and draw a smile on your face for all day long. Besides, they included a cover of "When I Want To Know" of The Remains and a brilliam instro power-pop tune called "Perrillos Verdes". 

SODA FRAISE - Ça Baigne Dans L'Huile / Rock n' Roll's (Sing Sing, 2013)

Este verano hemos podido disfrutar de la reedición del único single que nos dejaron los franceses Soda Fraise. Todo ello, gracias al trabajo de Sing Sing Records, sello de Nueva York encargado de reeditar auténtica joyas del punk y power-pop de los 70-80 (bandas tan deliciosas como Protex, The Jook, Orbits...).

Originalmente publicado por Philips en 1980, éste 7" contiene dos auténticos pildorazos de punk francés claramente influenciado gracias al éxito de Plastic Bertrand. Mucha melodía rock'n'roll, sobre todo la cara A.

SODA FRAISE - Ça Baigne Dans L'Huile

Poco más hay que decir de ellos, ya que no grabaron mucho más y se disolvieron en un año.

This summer, we have been happy to enjoy a reissue of the only single that the French band Soda Fraise recorded. It has been thanks to a record label from New York called Sing Sing Records. They are in charge of release 70s and 80s punk and power-pop gems (amazing bands like Protex, The Jook, Orbits...).

Originally released by Philips in 1980, this 7" has two real killer tunes of French punk, influenced by the success band Plastic Bertrand. Rock'n'roll melodies, A-side is a blast!!

Not to much to talk about them. They did not record any more and they disbanded after one whole year.

VACACIONES - Dani (Elefant Records, 1999)

Ya es Julio, época de calor y vacaciones. Rebusco entre mi discoteca y encuentro este precioso vinilo rojo que nos viene al pelo para la sección de discos de colores.

Primera grabación de Vacaciones para el sello Elefant en 1999. Un EP que incluye un par de canciones que se convirtiron en himnos de lo que se bautizó como naïf-pop a finales de los 90, época de Los Fresones Rebeldes y "Viaje a los Sueños Polares". Fue precisamente gracias éste programa el que los dio a conocer y por el que nació "Dani", tema que da nombre al EP. 

El pop francés, el sonido de los 60, las voces femeninas y (¿por qué no?) el punk, están presentes en este disco que no llega ni a los ocho minutos de duración. Su mala calidad sonora le proporciona esa cosa tan especial que tienen los discos chungos y que a mí, me alucina. 

We  are in July. Summer and holidays time. I was searching in my records collection and I found  this lovely red vinyl record that is coming just right for the colored vinyls section. 

Thsi is the first recording of Vacaciones for Elefant Records in 1999. It includes a couple songs became hymns for the called naïf-pop at late 90s, and age in Spain for Los Fresones Rebeldes and "Viaje a los Sueños Polares". This radio made public the existence of this band. So "Dani" was born. 

French pop, 60s sound, female voices and (why not?) punk are presents in this record that doesn't las any 8 minutes. The lo-fi sound gives a special thing that bad records usually have and I freak out. 

MASAAKI HIRAI. ¡El Elvis japonés!

Ace Records tiene el placer de presentarnos a Masaaki Hirao. ¡Nada más y nada menos conocido como “el Elvis japonés”! A principios de 1958, ya había tenido lugar el rockabiri buumu (“rockabilly boom”) en el País del Sol Naciente. Mickey Curtis, Keijiro “Kei-chan” Yamashita y Masaaki Hirao fueron tres de los exponentes en este género dentro de su país, conocidos como los Rokabirii Sannin Otoko (“Three Rockabillies”).

En el disco podéis encontrar temas propios y versiones de Elvis Presley y Eddie Cochran, pasando por Little Richard o Neil Sedaka. Pero no os engañéis. Los comienzos del rock’n’roll nipón nada tienen que ver con el sonido salvaje del garage-punk que empezaron a adoptar a partir de los años 90. Se trata más bien un sonido refinado con influencia del jazz y que se acerca, como no, a la música enka, típica del folklore japonés.

Este disco es sólo para frikis muy frikis del rock’n’roll y/o de la cultura japonesa popular. ¡Y perfecto para que una reseña como ésta sea publicada en nuestro blog “Banzai!”!

MASAAKI HIRAI. The Japanese Elvis!

Ace Records has the pleasure to introduce Masaari Hirao. None other than “The Japanese Elvis”! In early 1958, the rockabiru buumu (“rockabilly boom”) was born in the Land of the Rising Sun. Mickey Curtis, Keijiro “Kei-chan” Yamashita y Masaaki Hirao were famous rock’n’roll singles in this country, famed Rokabirii Sannin Otoko (“Three Rockabillies”).

You can hear in this record original songs and Elvis, Little Richard and Neil Sedaka covers. But you don’t feel disappointed. Early Japanese rock’n’roll is nothing to do with the wild garage-punk sound they started to play from the 90s. It’s a fine sound with jazz influence and very close to enka traditional Japanese music.

I think this is record is just for very rock’n’roll freaks and/or Japanese pop culture lovers. And it’s perfect a review like this is published in “Banzai!”.

GIUDA - Racey Roller (Damaged Goods, 2012)

El sello inglés DamagedGoods ha tenido la brillantísima idea de reeditar “Racey Roller”, disco debut de los Giuda. Las primeras 500 copias en color gris. Así que quienes no pudimos hacernos con la primera edición, ¡ya tenemos otra oportunidad! Yo arrasé con su “merchandising” el Viernes pasado después de verlos tocar en Londres, en una noche organizada por el club Some Weird Sin. ¡Salvaje!

No tengo palabras para este disco. Es sencillamente PERFECTO. Ninguna canción mala. ¡Atentos al instrumental “Racey Roller”! Diez pildorazos de puro glam, punk y rock’n’roll de los 70. Sonido que reproducen a la perfección. Aunque me he hecho muy, muy  fan de este rollo, creo que no  hay disco de ésa época que me guste entero (aunque el “Sweet Fanny Adams” de los Sweet tiene auténticos temazos), pero estos italianos han conseguido hacerlo en el siglo XXI. Recuerdo la primera que los vi en YouTube, que llegué a confundirlos con una banda de aquellos tiempos. El diseño gráfico, obra de Tony Crazeekid (no os perdáis sus recopilatorios “Boot Power”!!! Disponibles vía Soul Seek), está claramente inspirado en cualquier disco mercadillo. Los pliegues y las esquinas gastadas de la portada forman parte del diseño.

Sólo para fans de Gary Glitter, Slade, Sweet, Mott The Hopple, Cock Sparrer, The Equals, Marc Bolan, la purpurina y los años 70.

No hay duda. Me han marcado. I’m a Giuda fan!!!!

Damaged Goods, the English label, has had the brilliant idea to release “Racey Roller”, Giuda’s debut work.  The first 500 copies are on grey vinyl. So if you can’t get the first issue, now you can do it! I went crazy with all the merchandising the last Friday, after their London show at Buffalo Bar organized by Some Weird Sin club. It was wild!

I have no words for this album. It’s just PERFECT. No bad songs. Listen to the instrumental tune called “Racey Roller”! Ten killer glam, punk and 70s rock’n’roll tunes. They copy this sound perfectly. Although I have become a very, very fan ot this stuff, I think there aren’t whole records I really like (although “Sweet Fanny Adams” by Sweet is amazing), but these Italian people have do it in the 21^st century. I remember the first time I hear them in YouTube that I confused them with a real glam band from that era. The graphic design, by Tony Crazeekid (don’t miss the “Boot Power” comps! Available on Soul Seek), is clearly inspired by the junkshop glam records. Crease and worn-out corners are part of design.

Only for Gary Glitter, Slade, Sweet, Mott The Hopple, Cock Sparrer, The Equals, Marc Bolan, glitter and 1970s fans.

There’s no doubt. I’m deeply marked by them. I’m a Giuda fan!!!!

DOCTOR EXPLOSION - Maximum Rhythm & Shit (Demolition Derby, 1996)

Como hace tiempo que no subo ningún disco de color, aquí va uno de mi colección. Un EP que sacaron los Dr. Explosion en 1996 para el sello belga Demolition Derby. 

Un disquito azul donde suenan un par de temas incluidos en su "Aquellos Maravillosos 90" ("Fart" y "A Greedy Girl Like You"), más el "Hunger" (que es el ya clásico "Mata a la Tuna" pero cantado en inglés) y una versión de "Chicago" de los Phantom Brothers.

As I haven't uploaded a color vinyl since a long time ago, here you have one from my collection. An EP released by Dr. Explosion in 1996 for Belgium label Demolition Derby. 

This little blue record includes a couple of tunes you can find on their LP called "Aquellos Maravillosos 90" ("Fart" andn "A Greedy Girl Like You"), plus "Hunger" (the classic "Mata a la Tuna" song but singed in English) and a cover of The Phantom Brothers, "Chicago". 

VV.AA. Too Much Rockin' (Wendi Records, 198?)

Entre mediados y finales de los 80, el sello australiano Wendi Records comenzó a sacar una serie de volúmenes dedicados al rockabilly, el R&B o el doo-wop. El único disco que yo tenía hasta ahora del sello era el “From The Garage To The Studio”, una recopilación de temas raros de rock’n’roll de los 50 que me compré hace tiempo en una de las tiendas de la calle Tallers de Barcelona (¡visita obligada para cualquier yonki de los discos!).

Años después, y tras un largo periodo de búsqueda y captura, soy la feliz poseedora del “Too Much Rockin’”, referencia número cuatro del sello Wendi y con los Hermanos Marx en la portada (no sé por qué). De alguna manera llegó a mis oídos, y desde entonces es uno de mis discos favoritos. La mayoría son temas de entre 1958 y 1962. Rhythm & blues y doo wop. Rock’n’Roll negro, en definitiva.

Thurston Harris

Vienen un par de temas de Thurston Harris para Aladdin: “Smokey Joes” y (el mejor) “Do What You Did”. De Young Jessie incluye el famoso “Hit, Git & Split” y la cara B del single que tampoco tiene desperdicio. Similar a éste tema es otro ya clásico entre las rarezas de R&B como es el “Juicy Fruit” de Rudy Green, ¡con piano y saxo sonando durante toda la canción! “Rock, Rock, Rock” de los Blue Jays es otra de las canciones que más me gustan del disco, claro ejemplo de rock’n’roll de grupo vocal, como el “Rock’n’Roll Radio” de Joe Boot & The Fabulous Winds. Hablando de grupos vocales, en la cara B aparecen los Electras con “Ten Steps To Love”. Tema FAVORITO de doo-wop. The Electras grabaron años antes dos de los rocanroles más salvajes que he podido escuchar bajo el nombre de The Valiants, y como The Untouchables también tienen material bueno. Hay mucha historia detrás de este grupo y espero poder contar más adelante. Quiero decir con todo esto que no es de extrañar que con este tan buen gusto, “Ten Steps To Love” sea TAN bueno.

Chuck Higgins

A parte de todo esto, viene una versión del “Stay” de Maurice Williams por Porgy and The Monarchs; el famoso “Mamma Get Your Hammer”, del que se dice que es el (atención) único blanco del disco: Bobby Peterson. Y Ray Sharpe, Chuck Higgins, Dean and Jean…

Sólo se sacaron 300 copias, así que afortunados quienes tengamos en nuestras manos semejante tesoro.

At the middle or late 80s, the Australian Wend Records started to release some issues focus on rockabilly, R&B or doo-wop. My only record from this label was “From The Garage To The Studio”, a 50s rare rock’n’roll compilation I bought in a record shop a long time ago in Tallers street in Barcelona (essential visit for any vinyl records junkie!).

A few years ago and after a long searching time, I am the happy owner of “Too Much Rockin’” LP, reference number 4 of Wendi Records and with the Marx Brothers on the front (I don’t know why) Since I heard it for the very first time, it has been one of my favourite records. The most tunes are between 1958 and 1962. R&B y doo wop. Black rock’n’roll, definitely.

You can find a couple Thurton Harris tunes which were released by Aladdin Records: “Smokey Joes” and (the best) “Do What You Did”. It includes the famous “Hit, Git & Split” by Young Jessie and also brilliant flipside. A reminiscent of this one is the rare R&B classic “Juicy Fruit” by Rudy Green, with piano and killer saxo playing for the whole song! “Rock, Rock, Rock” by The Blue Jays is another of my favourite songs of this record, an example of good rock’n’roll by a vocal group, like “Rock’n’Roll Radio” by Joe Boot & The Fabulous Winds. By the way, you can fint The Electras and “Ten Steps To Love” on the B-side. FAVORITE tune. The Electras recorded two real killer rock’n’roll songs a few years before as The Valiants. And you can find another good songs under the name of The Untouchables. There’s too much to tell about this band and I hope I’m able to tell in the next time. If they had a really good musical taste, I mean it’s hardly surprising “Ten Steps To Love” is SUCH a killer tune.

Besides, you can find Maurice Williams’ “Stay” covered by Porgy and The Monarchs;  the famous “Mamm Get Your Hammer” by (apparently) the only non-black artist featured on this LP: Bobby Peterson. And Ray Sharpe, Chuck Higgins, Dean and Jean…

Wendi Records just released 300 copies approx. Lucky us who can hold in our hand such gem.

THE NECESSARIES - You Can Borrow My Car / Runaway Child (Minors Beware) (Spy Records, 1979)

Ya es mis manos esta joya producida por John Cale en 1979. Primer y único single de los Necessaries, banda (según me acabo de enterar) coliderada por Chris Spedding y con Ernie Brooks (Modern Lovers) al bajo. Más tarde completarían su discografía con un par de LPs. 

A finales de 1978, Spedding se mudó a Estados Unidos para tocar durante un año con Robert Gordon. Y, aunque participó en la grabación de este single,  no figura en el mismo precisamente por su contrato con el cantante. 

La cara B es el tema que he subido para escuchar. Aparece en el segundo volumen del fantástico recopilatorio de punk/power-pop Back Seat Love. No tengo palabras. Sencillamente acojonante!!!! Se ha convertido en uno de mis temas favoritos del punk.

Finally, I'm holding in my  hands this gem. A John Cale  production in 1979. It was the first and only single of the New York band The Necessaries, a band (according to what I have just read) with Chris Spedding among the members and Ernie Brooks (Modern Lovers) as bass player. They'd complete their discography with a couple of LPs. 

Spedding moved to USA at late 1978. He had a one year contract to play with Robert Gordon. Although he 

participated in this single recording, he doesn't appear because of secondary problems with Gordon. 

I've uploaded the killer B-side. You can find it on the second volume of the amazing punk/power-pop compilation called "Back Seat Love". No words!!! Bloody great!! It has become one of my favorites punk tunes. 

THE DAVE CLARK FIVE play Good Old Rock and Roll

Rebuscando entre discos en una de las "Charity Shops" de Chelmsford, encontré esta portada de los Dave Clark Five. Vacía. No encontré el disco por ningún lado, pero me parecieron muy simpáticos los dibujos de los Teddy Boys. Así que metí en ella un single de Dave Edmunds, y me la llevé. 

Pertenece a una grabación de los Dave Clark Five de finales de los 60 o principios de los 70, imagino. Son 9 temas de rock'n'roll clásico cantados en plan "popurrí". 

Bueno, si algún día encuentro el disco, me lo llevaré. Aunque tampoco creo que pierda nada del otro mundo...

I was searching for records in a Charity Shop from Chelmsford last Saturday and suddenly I found this cover. It was empty. I didn't find the record in any place, but the Teddy Boys pictures were looking very funny for me. So, I kept a Dave Edmund record inside, and I took away. 

The cover belongs to a The Dave Clark Five recording from late 60s or early 70s, I think. It was a rock'n'roll oldies medley. 

Well, I'll buy the record if I find it someday. Although I think it won't be anything from out of this world...

THE STUKAS - Klean Livin' Kids / Oh Little Girl (Chiswick Records, 1977)

¡Por fin es mío! “Klean Living Kids” de los Stukas, una de las joyas que nos dejó Chiswick Records y uno de mis temas favoritos desde que lo escuché por primera vez, hace ya algunos años, en aquel primer volumen de los Fuzz Face que hacía Jolete Macana.

El segundo single, un EP  de tres canciones, sí lo tengo de hace tiempo y suelo pincharlo a menudo cuando me toca poner punk y rock’n’roll 70. Lo grabaron para Sonet y se llama “I Like Sport”.

¡Rocanroleros y tremendamente divertidos!

Finally it’s mine! “Klean Living Kids” by The Stukas, one of the Chiswick Records' gem and one of my favorite tunes since I listened to for the very first time, a few years ago, thanks to the Fuzz Face Vol. 1 by Jolete Macana.

The second single is an EP with three songs and I got it since a long time ago. I usually play it in my DJ sessions when I play punk and 70s rock’n’roll. They recorded for Sonet Records and it’s called “I Like Sport”.

Extremely funny rock’n’rollers!!!

DEE DEE SHARP - Do The Bird / Lover Boy (Cameo, 1963)

¡Otro regalo de cumpleaños! Todo un detalle del señor David Mockingbird.

Sobra decir que Dee Dee Sharp es una de mis debilidades. Imprescindibles sus grabaciones para Cameo.

Another birthday gift! It has been a real kindness from David Mockingbird. 

There is no need to say Dee Dee Sharp is one of my weakness. Her recordings for Cameo Records are essentials. 

This 7" includes the hit "Do The Bird" and "Lover Boy", which you can listen to below. As the record as the cover are mint. Looking forward to play it in the next party!

VV.AA. Boppin' Bobbie Jean - 16 Hot Rockin' Tracks (Stock Car Records, 2008)

¡Disco nuevo! Regalo de mi muchacho por mi cumpleaños.

Una recopilación cojonuda de 16 temas raros de rock'n'roll, rockabilly y algunos instrumentales de finales de los 50 y principios de los 60 (¡lo mejor de lo mejor!). 

Abre y da nombre al disco un tema de King Victor. De la cara A destacaría el "The Right To Rock" de Trini Lopez, una de sus primeras grabaciones para el sello Volk. Y uno de los mejores temas es el increíble "Dragon Walk" de los Nobelmen, un clásico del sonido instrumental con saxofón y sonido fuzz, rollo tittyshaker, al estilo de  los Las Vegas Grind. 

El divertido "Guitar Boogie Twist" de los Virtues es otro de los instrumentales que trae. Y también a ritmo de twist se encargan los Four J's de contar uno de los pasatiempos favoritos de los adolescentes de los años 50 en el "Kissin' at the Drive-In". Muy "high school". 

Entrando más en los 60, Simon Scott se marca una un tema de lo más vacilón con "Move It Baby". Y de 1965 viene una canción de Ken West llamada "You Give Me The Willies", muy rara, y que me recuerda a Charlie Feathers. Pero para rara, el "Rhythm Rock" de Jackie and  his Rocking Boys, que todavía no pillo en qué idioma está. Parece francés. Con la que no hay duda es con "El Rock del Ton Ton" de Johnny Tedesco, ¡el Elvis argentino! Un rock'n'roll desde latinoamérica cantado en español y con el que se cierra este tremendo recopilatorio. 

"Kissin' at the Drive-In"

New record for my collection! My boy gave me it for my birthday. 

This is an awesome comp of 16 rare rockin' tracks from late 50s and early 60s (best of the best!!). 

The record is called like a King Victor song and it is the first tune of the comp. One of my favorites is "The Right To Rock" of Trini Lopez, one of his early recordings for Volk Records. And one of the best tunes is "Dragon Walk" of The Nobelmen, a killer classic teen instrumental tune with saxo and fuzz sound, tittyshaker and Las Vegas Grind comps style. 

The funny "Guitar Boogie Twist" of The Virtues is another instro tune. And  The Four J's tell about one of the favorite interests of American teenagers in the 50s in "Kissin at the Drive-In" like a twist dance and high school sound too. 

Entering in the 60s, Simon Scott sings with a cool style in "Move It Baby". And there's a 1965 rare song of Ken West called "You Give Me The Willies", maybe similar to Charlie Feathers. THE DONNAS - American Teenage Rock'n'Roll Machine (Lookout! Records, 1998)

“I'll grow up when I'm ready.
And I don't wanna be just a weekend kid,
I wanna party whenever I can”.

Esta semana estoy disfrutando como nunca con mi último pedido. Andaba años detrás del “American Teenage Rock’n’Roll Machine” de las Donnas, su segundo disco y el primer para Lookout!, cuando el sello pasaba por su mejor época con grupos como Riverdales, The Queeres o Groovie Ghoulies.

Corría el año 1998 y, antes de que aprendieran a tocar y se hicieran aburridas, la batería de las Donnas sonaba a pura chatarra. Aunque siempre fans de Poison y Mötley Crüe, sus primeros discos eran un claro cruce entre Ramones y los primeros Kiss… ¡con mucho rock’n’roll! Su canción “Rock’n’Roll Machine” es toda una declaración de principios y resume el espíritu que tenían cuando grabaron el disco con apenas veinte años: ganas de tocar y pasarlo bien.

Los años pasaron y las Donnas se hicieron mayores. Apredieron a tocar y empezaron a tener éxito para deleite de los fans más heavys y hard-rockeros. Pero para otros fans, las Donnas siempre aquellas chicas feas de Palo Alto de camiseta, pantalones y Converse que no querían crecer. ¡Las reinas del rock’n’roll adolescente! 

 

How I’m enjoying this week with my last order! I was wishing having this record from a long time ago: The Donnas “American Teenage Rock’n’Roll Machine”, their second record and the first one for Lookout! Records, when the label was releasing to Riverdales, The Queers or Groovie Ghoules for their golden age.

It was 1998 and, before The Donnas learn to play music and they become a bored hard-rock band, their sound of the battery was trash. They were always Poison and Mötley Crüe fans, but their first recordings were a mix between Ramones and Kiss… with a lot of real rock’n’roll! The song “Rock’n’Roll Machine” is a declaration of principles and it resumes the teenage rock’n’roll spirit when they record this LP with nearly 20 years old: feelings to play music and having fun.

Years passed and The Donnas grew up. They learnt to play and the began to have some hits to heavies and hard-rocker fans’ delight. But other fans remain to them like the ugly girls from Palo Alto with t-shirt, trousers and Converse shoes that they didn’t want to grow up. The eenage rock’n’roll queens!
