El payaso CLARABELL: los orígenes de DIVINE

El payaso Clarabell, una de las primeras influencias de John Waters desde su más tierna infancia, en los años 50, cuando veía el "The Howdy Doody Show". 

Un personaje terrorífico para él y de lo más bizarro, le inspiró para el maquillaje que caracterizaría a su musa Divine en "Pink Flamingos".

THE DONNAS - American Teenage Rock'n'Roll Machine (Lookout! Records, 1998)

“I'll grow up when I'm ready.
And I don't wanna be just a weekend kid,
I wanna party whenever I can”.

Esta semana estoy disfrutando como nunca con mi último pedido. Andaba años detrás del “American Teenage Rock’n’Roll Machine” de las Donnas, su segundo disco y el primer para Lookout!, cuando el sello pasaba por su mejor época con grupos como Riverdales, The Queeres o Groovie Ghoulies.

Corría el año 1998 y, antes de que aprendieran a tocar y se hicieran aburridas, la batería de las Donnas sonaba a pura chatarra. Aunque siempre fans de Poison y Mötley Crüe, sus primeros discos eran un claro cruce entre Ramones y los primeros Kiss… ¡con mucho rock’n’roll! Su canción “Rock’n’Roll Machine” es toda una declaración de principios y resume el espíritu que tenían cuando grabaron el disco con apenas veinte años: ganas de tocar y pasarlo bien.

Los años pasaron y las Donnas se hicieron mayores. Apredieron a tocar y empezaron a tener éxito para deleite de los fans más heavys y hard-rockeros. Pero para otros fans, las Donnas siempre aquellas chicas feas de Palo Alto de camiseta, pantalones y Converse que no querían crecer. ¡Las reinas del rock’n’roll adolescente! 

 

How I’m enjoying this week with my last order! I was wishing having this record from a long time ago: The Donnas “American Teenage Rock’n’Roll Machine”, their second record and the first one for Lookout! Records, when the label was releasing to Riverdales, The Queers or Groovie Ghoules for their golden age.

It was 1998 and, before The Donnas learn to play music and they become a bored hard-rock band, their sound of the battery was trash. They were always Poison and Mötley Crüe fans, but their first recordings were a mix between Ramones and Kiss… with a lot of real rock’n’roll! The song “Rock’n’Roll Machine” is a declaration of principles and it resumes the teenage rock’n’roll spirit when they record this LP with nearly 20 years old: feelings to play music and having fun.

Years passed and The Donnas grew up. They learnt to play and the began to have some hits to heavies and hard-rocker fans’ delight. But other fans remain to them like the ugly girls from Palo Alto with t-shirt, trousers and Converse shoes that they didn’t want to grow up. The eenage rock’n’roll queens!

   

THE FLY AND HIS ONE MAN GARBAGE

¡La única "mosca orquesta" del mundo llega desde Japón! Después de pasar por una serie de bandas en Shizuoka, Money Child decide emprender su proyecto en solitario bajo el nombre de "The Fly and his One Man Garbage".

Blues-punk y puro garage chatarrero como todo buen hombre orquesta. Recomendado por su primo Dead Elvis. Sale a tocar cada fin de semana en fiestas rock'n'roll de Japón y ha participado en homenajes a los Cramps y a Lux Interior. En el recopilatorio "One Man Bands Worlwide" se incluye su tema "Devil Inside Blues".

Sus actuaciones van acompañadas del show burlesque de la bella Miss Tarantula. 

 

The only "one fly band" in the world comes from Japan! Money Child has played in many bands from Shizuoka and now you can see him with the name of "The Fly and his One Man Garbage".

He plays blues-punk and real lo-fi garage like a good one man band. He's recommended by his cousin Dead Elvis. He usually plays everyweekend in Japanese rock'n'roll parties and he has collaborated in tributes to The Cramps and Lux Interior. You can find the song "Devil Inside Blues" in the comp "One Man Bands Worlwide".

The beauty Miss Tarantula go with him in every show. 

THE SPLATCATS - Sin 73 (Moving Target Records, 1986)

"Lust-crazed teens on a rhythm-driven rampage!!!"

Mi última compra, adquirida hace un par de semanas en la Feria del Disco de Algeciras.

Desde Buffalo, Nueva York, llegaban Splatcats a finales de los años 80, en plena época del resurgimiento del garage. Su discografía es breve y Sin 73 (probar a leerlo con la portada hacia abajo) es, sin duda, su mejor trabajo.

Garage con algunos toques de surf y, por supuesto, punk. Clara influencia de Barracudas en su fantástico "Surfin' Hearse" de Jan & Dean. La otra versión que incluyen es el "Wildman" de los Tamrons, un clásico del 60s punk.

Y, personalmente, ¡la portada es acojonante! Lástima que su autor (firma un tal V.Laszlo...) parece que no tenga mucho más...

My last purchase. I bought it a couple weeks ago at Algeciras Record Fair.

Splatcats was a Buffalo, New York band in the late 80s when the revival garage time. They have a short discography and Sin 73 (try to look at the printing upside down) is their best work.

Garage music with some touches of surf and punk, of course. Clear Barracudas influence in their fantastic “Surfin’ Hearse” of Jan & Dean. “Wildman” of The Tamrons is another cover they include, a classic 60s punk.

And, personally, the art cover is gorgeous!!! It’s a pity the graphic artist (cover is signed by someone called V. Laszlo…) looks like he doesn’t have more works…

 

PRIMA DONNA - Bless This Mess (Wanda Records, 2012)

En cuanto llegó este disco a mis manos, lo primero que hice fue pinchar la quinta canción de la cara B. ¡Sí! "Puta, te amo" se ha convertido en la canción del año desde que la escuchara por primera vez durante una de las giras europeas de la banda. Los vi en el Louie Louie de Estepona (¡uno de los mejores garitos de rock'n'roll en España!) y al día siguiente, repetí concierto en Cádiz.

"Bless This Mess" es el tercer disco de Prima Donna. Editado en CD por Acetate Records y en formato vinilo color gracias al sello alemán Wanda Records (a elegir entre naranja/blanco o naranja/negro). Doce temas donde el grupo continúa fiel a sus influencias más claras como son T-Rex y Mott The Hoople. También encontramos guiños a Gary Glitter y, como no, a David Bowie. Y a New York Dolls, también. ¡Sonido de los años 70! Pero ellos están lejos de ser un grupo "retro". Son una banda glam del siglo XXI.

Y si escucháis "Crimson Lust", notaréis como hacen un claro homenaje a Iggy and the Stooges. Incluso algunas críticas le encuentran a "Miss Avenue" un cierto parecido con X-Ray Spex. Y es que, como digo siempre, el piano y el saxofón son imprescindibles para la buena música. Acojonante el solo de saxo en "Puta, te amo", tema inspirado en una pintada que se encontraron en un WC de Zaragoza. A mi me llegó a recordar incluso al "Nancy" de los Zoquillos. Y no podemos olvidar el tema extra que incluye el LP, otro de mis favoritos: "Some Kinda Nerve", ¡perfecto para cerrar y empezar la fiesta!

Como ya dije en el otro artículo, no podéis perdéroslos si pasan por vuestra ciudad. Si os gusta el disco, su enérgico y potente directo no os va a dejar indiferentes. Además, podréis comprobar el gran gusto musical que tienen. Suelen empezar tocando el "Rumble" de Link Wray y se atreven a versionear a Bowie, Generation X, Little Richard, Eddie Cochran... y hasta a Parálisis Permanente. La mayor sorpresa para los fans españoles. Casi nada. ¡Un diez para ellos!

 

As soon I held this record, I played the track 5 of the B side. Yeah!! "Puta, te amo" has become the song of the year since I listened to for the very first time for one the European tour of the band. I saw them at Louie Louie in Estepona (one of the best rock'n'roll bars in Spain!) and I saw them in Cádiz at next day.

"Bless This Mess" is the third record of Prima Donna. It has been released in CD by Acetate Records and LP by the German Wanda Records (you can choose between either orange/white or orange/black). 12 tunes in which the band keep fidelity to their influences like T-Rex and Mott The Hoople. Also we find references to Gary Glitter and David Bowie, of course. New York Dolls too. Real 70s sound! But they are far away to be a "retro" band. They are a 21st century glam band.

And if you listen to "Crimson Lust", you'll feel like an Iggy & The Stooges tribute. Even some critics say "Miss Avenue" is similar to X-Ray Spex. Like I always say, piano and saxophone are essentials for the good rock'n'roll. Killer saxo sound in "Puta, te amo"!! Song inspired in graffiti they find in a WC when they visited Zaragoza, in Spain. It even remained to me to "Nancy" of Zoquillos. And we can't forget the extra song you can find just in the LP. Another of my favorite songs: "Some kinda nerve". Perfect tune to close and start the party!

I said in another post you can't miss them if they visit your city. If you like this record, you'll like their energetic and powerful live show. Besides, you'll be able to check the great musical taste they have. They usually start with "Rumble" of Link Wray and they cover to Bowie, Generation X, Little Richard, Eddie Cohran... even Parálisis Permanente, a famous post-punk Spanish band from the 80s.
